History of laingsburg - the Geological wonderland

A small, modern Karoo Village, Laingsburg lies at the confluence of two rivers, but one of the driest parts of the Country. Laingsburg is 280 km from Cape Town just off the N1 highway that travels through the Great Karoo. Despite its dryness, they are well known for the freak flood that devastated the Town on the 25 of January 1981. In a matter of Hours the entire Town was under water, with only the roofs of Houses visible. This, traumatic event was due to an abnormal rainfall in the Catchments of both the Buffels River and Baviaans Rivers that come together in the Town. This catastrophic event claimed; 104 Lives and leaving only 21 Buildings standing. Today high water marks line lamp posts and the Dutch Reformed Church, one of the few remaining Buildings, to serve as a reminder, and the local Library has a collection of photographs and press cuttings covering the disaster. The Laingsburg Flood Museum, is dedicated to capturing the essence of the Town and its People, and conveying the mammoth effect of this Disaster. Memorabilia, Artifacts and Information, continues to be gathered for an accurate, up-to-date Exhibition that speaks to the hearts and minds of those that visit!
Laingsburg, initially called Buffelsrivier (Buffalo River), is considered something of a Geological wonderland. Running alongside its main Road are layers of fossilized mud stone and a yellow bank of volcanic ash that have blown across from South America, 250 Million Years ago. There is also a distinguishing white quartz band that runs between Matjiesfontein and Laingsburg and on into the Eastern Cape Province, indicating continental drift – a similar layer is found in South America.
There is now a Geological walk on the Farm; ‘Geelbeksbrug’, 12 km North of Laingsburg to cater for the growing interest in the Geology of the Area. Known as the Blockhouse Route, because of its proximity to the Anglo-Boer War Blockhouse, the route takes in a number of fascinating rock formations.
The Area also caters extensively for outdoor enthusiasts. There are a number of Hiking Trails; including the 24 km ‘Klipkraal Route’ which is along the crest of the Swartberg and the 16 km’ Verlorenhoek Trail’ as well as, a hike designed specially for bird fanatics at ‘Kraankop Farm’.

Laingsburg Flood Museum

Enjoy authentic Karoo hospitality with liberal lashings of culture and history at the Laingsburg Flood Museum.

On 25 January 1981, the Karoo changed forever. The little town of Laingsburg was hit by what continues to be one of the most dramatic natural disasters ever to have happened in South Africa, the Laingsburg Flood. The tragedy and destruction that this caused could not easily be forgotten by those who experienced it, but is also immortalised in the Laingsburg Flood Museum, which is situated in the town of the same name, deep in the Western Cape Province and the Great Karoo.

Anglo Boer War Blockhouse

The Boer War Blockhouse located in Laingsburg at the Geelbek River railway bridge was built in 1902 by the British. In 1965, this guard tower, used as a defense against the Boers, was declared a National Monument.

The Laingsburg area saw plenty of action during the Anglo Boer War, as a result several Blockhouses were constructed in the region as a means to manage the movements of the Boers, who brought warfare and strife into the territory controlled by the British Colonial Authorities.

DIEP EN DEUR 4X4 TRAIL

Between Laingsburg and Touws River you’ll find the Witteberg Private Nature Reserve and in that the Diep en Deur 4×4 trail which is a bundle of fun.

This 15km trail is only one of four in the reserve and at the halfway point you’ll find wonderful views of the Matroosberg peak. You’ll need a vehicle with 4×4 capabilites, low range and high clearance because this trail takes between four and five hours to complete with a difficulty grading of three.

BUFFELSPOORT RUBICON 4X4 TRAIL

One of the wonderful gems of the Western Cape Province of South Africa is Buffelspoort. This is a pristine wilderness area that is also a formal Natural Heritage site, thanks to its abundance and beauty. The trail is less than 40 kilometres from Laingsburg, which is a small town in the Groot Karoo.

The Buffelspoort Rubicon 4×4 Trail is only 12 kilometres long, but takes between six and eight hours to complete, thanks to the very challenging terrain that consists of mud, water, rocks and sand.

Josephskraal 4x2 Trail

Josephskraal Trail is 40 km from Laingsburg and offers a circular route suitable for 4×2 vehicles with diff-lock. High clearance vehicles are required. The sandy track in the riverbed is more challenging and the experienced drivers are recommended to tackle this section. The trail is 23 km long and it takes about 3 to 5 hours to complete

Moordenaarskaroo (Murderers’ Karoo)

The Moordenaarskaroo sort of lies between Laingsburg, Sutherland and Merweville, but it does not include any of these towns. Merweville and Laingsburg are in the Koup while Sutherland is in the Roggeveld. So the Moordenaarskaroo is just this townless area, a mysterious space, almost like the Burmuda triangle.

It’s a desolate and barren place, but if you love the Karoo this is a must see!

It is said that about 60km from Laingsburg the area is haunted. Strange grey shapes and shadows constantly appear and disappear in parts of the veld in this area of the Moordenaarskaroo. And, weirdest of all, they appear even in broad daylight.

The scenery here is amazing. It’s barren and lonely, and yet breathtakingly beautiful

we are situated 800m from the n1 national highway

The N1 stretches 1 937 kilometres from Cape Town to the Beit Bridge border post, on the Limpopo River between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The N1 from Colesberg to Bloemfontein is highly significant because it was the first single-carriageway freeway built in South Africa.
he N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town is by far the fastest way to get from the Golden City to the Mother City if you’re travelling by car. Admittedly, traversing the flat plains of the Free State and seemingly endless koppies of the Great Karoo can be a tedious way to start and end your annual family holiday.
